The 52 kWh entry car pairs with a 174 hp motor. Step up to the 75 kWh pack and you get 214 hp and up to 303 miles of range. For most households the larger battery is the one worth stretching for, but the cheaper car is not a decoy trim, and that matters.

The new Leaf charges at up to 150 kW and, more importantly, has dual charging ports including native NACS. That means Tesla Supercharger access without carrying an adapter, which for a car aimed at first-time EV buyers removes one of the most persistent sources of confusion.

The Timing
Launching an affordable EV into the post-credit US market looks either brave or shrewd depending on the quarter you examine. US EV sales fell sharply after the federal credit expired, and the cheapest models were hit hardest because the $7,500 represented a far larger share of their price.
That is precisely the gap the new Leaf is aimed at. With nothing to subsidise, the winning move is to build a car that is genuinely cheap rather than one that was cheap only after a rebate.
