Tesla's Cybercab started carrying members of the public in Austin on September 4, which makes it the first vehicle the company has put into commercial service with no steering wheel and no pedals fitted at all. For a machine this significant, the launch was remarkably quiet.
A Launch Without the Theatre
Tesla held the formal launch event in Austin on September 3, then opened public rides the following day at 5pm Central. What it did not do was stream the event, deliver a keynote, or stage any of the spectacle that normally surrounds a Tesla product reveal. The event was closed, and a fair number of enthusiasts were unimpressed at being shut out of a moment they had been anticipating for two years.
There is a reasonable interpretation of that restraint. A company putting driverless cars on public roads has more to lose from over-promising than from under-selling, and the quieter the launch, the less pressure there is if something goes wrong in week one.
The Car Itself
The Cybercab is a two-seater built for one job. There is no steering wheel and no pedals, so there is no provision for a human to take over, which is a meaningful departure from the Model Y robotaxis Tesla has been running with safety monitors aboard. Autonomy runs on the company's AI4 computer.
Two seats is a deliberate constraint. The majority of ride-hail trips carry one or two passengers, and designing for that case rather than for a five-seat saloon frees up packaging and cost. It also means the Cybercab cannot serve airport runs with luggage, families, or group trips, which leaves a sizeable share of the market to other vehicles in the fleet.
The Mileage Claim
At the event, Tesla's vice president of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, told attendees the robotaxi fleet had passed one million unsupervised miles. The number worth noting is not the total but the rate: Tesla had disclosed roughly 380,000 unsupervised miles in late July, meaning about 620,000 miles were added in around six weeks.
That is a steep acceleration, and it is the kind of curve the company needs if it is to reach the scale it has promised investors. It is also, for now, a figure reported by Tesla about Tesla. Independent verification of autonomous mileage remains one of the weakest links in this entire sector.

Scale Is Still the Sticking Point
As of launch, Tesla had 45 Cybercabs authorised for driverless operation in Texas, from a total of 420 vehicles registered in the state for driverless operation. Those are pilot numbers, not network numbers.
For comparison, a working ride-hail service in a city the size of Austin needs vehicles in the thousands to offer the wait times people expect. Forty-five cars can prove the technology and generate data; they cannot yet replace anyone's commute. The interesting question over the next two quarters is how quickly that authorised count climbs, and whether regulators outside Texas prove as accommodating.
What It Means for Everyone Else
For riders in Austin, this is a novelty that is about to become a transport option. For the rest of the industry, it is a marker: a purpose-built driverless vehicle with no manual controls is now carrying paying passengers on public roads in a major US city.
Whether that turns into a business depends on cost per mile, regulatory appetite outside Texas, and a safety record accumulated over years rather than weeks. The technology milestone has been reached. The commercial one has not.
